Brandywine earns a hard fought 36-32 victory over Media.
Rivalry, opposition, foe, adversary. One would be hard pressed picking one of those terms to describe Media Rugby. One thing is for sure, when Brandywine and Media meet on the pitch, there is definitely no love lost between the two clubs.
The match against Media Saturday served as a measuring stick for BRFC as they prepare for Austin, Texas and the National Sweet 16’s. Media is one of the premier Division I teams in the area, being highly skilled and a physical force.
Media struck first blood on the scoring sheet going up early on Brandywine. That would halt as Louis Tulio dodged Media tacklers, sprinting towards the try zone, eventually touching the ball down for the score. Captain Owen Gardner would enter the scoring fray with a try of his own before Steve McCusker added his first try of the day. John Grace, who filled in admirably for Dave Bardwell at flyhalf, converted two of three attempts helping BRFC to a 19-13 advantage going into the half.
Knowing the Media never say die attitude could swell and attack at any moment, Brandywine looked to slam the door on them from the opening kick of the new half. Dave Sawhill and John Grace took the momentum pendulum and ran with it, scoring a try a piece to extend the lead for Brandywine. With two successful conversions, Brandywine was sitting on a 33-13 advantage with a little under 20 minutes to play. And then, the Media onslaught began.
Media struck back with 19 points in the final 15 minutes, cutting the Brandywine advantage to just one. With less than three minutes to play, John Grace dropped back, dropped the ball and kicked it through the posts adding 3 points to the Brandywine lead, and sealing a hard fought victory.
