Brandywine Rugby hosted Frederick in the first round of MARFU playoffs Saturday at Howellmoore Road. Frederick would look for redemption against Brandywine as BRFC ousted the number four seed from the South in last years opening round.
Frederick set the pace early, using their back line to attack the Brandywine defense. They were able to convert two early penalty conversions, giving them a six point lead. Brandywine would counter with trys by Wayne DiMarco and John Convery, as well as a conversion by Dave Bardwell, giving the home team a 12-6 lead going into half time.
The second half opened with a tired Frederick team attempting to stop a vigorous Brandywine forward pack. BRFC pushed the opposing pack around the pitch, allowing eight-man Matt Stauffer to pick a ball from the back of a scrum and score his first try of the day. Continuing their forward dominance, Brandywine secured a line out ball and drove the Frederick pack into their own try zone where Dair DiRemijo touched the ball down extending the BRFC lead. Finally, using the short side of the field, Nick Wood scored the final try of the day for Brandywine, on a pick from the back of the ruck. Dave Bardwell would add another conversion while John Grace ended the scoring with a penalty kick giving Brandywine a 32-6 hard fought victory.
